Gravestones conceal all kinds of fascinating stories. We discovered this some years ago when we produced our first series of London Epitaphs, based on people of interest buried at Brockley and Ladywell Cemetery in South East London. We've just created a new series of London Epitaphs, this time focusing on Nunhead Cemetery, one of the so-called Magnificent Seven of the capital's great Victorian burial grounds. Working with the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery (FONC), we've come up with 10 thoroughly-researched and beautifully-crafted stories which, we hope, will transport you to another time and place.
We've also made sure that we record from the actual cemetery for the opening and closing episodes to give you that much more authenticity. It's a wonderful place, partially overgrown and a peaceful haven, with intriguing avenues, extraordinary monuments and fabulous views of the City. We wanted you to enter than leafy world with us. But it's also a source of some astonishing stories, including the deeply moving account of the Leysdown Tragedy, the exciting history behind the Scottish Martyrs monument and tales of religious sects, great inventors, veterans of historic battles and the finest entertainers of their day. There's also a murder, not for any clickbait reasons, but because its such a touching and human story.
The episodes go out on The History Kiosk, a new Spotify channel which aims to brings you true stories you won't find anywhere else. We know you're going to love this series - it's been such a rollercoaster ride to make - and we're excited to think of you discovering them.
